If you like Eurogames (e.g. Settlers of Catan), this is one of the best. Kind of "sequel" to Modern Art.

Everything about this place is amazing. Get the Pork Buns, Momofuku Ramen, and try to reserve a spot one day for the Fried Chicken. Yum.

These guys really know their stuff, and are super friendly to boot. If you're in NYC or SF and interested in tech jobs, you should get in touch.

Also, check out their side project, LinkedList NYC: hunch.com/item/hn_3603694/

Vi Hart calls herself a "recreational mathemusician." In this series of videos, she argues that math can actually be fun (!), leading you along a chain of thoughts about mathematical concepts with accompanying doodles. No math background required!

Wow that's really great!
This sort of exploratory mathematics is a wonderful way to get interested.

Ended up watching all of those. So good.

I think the Snakes and Graphs one was my favorite, lots of awesome ideas and drawings and even wordplay like Serpentagram!

It's a shooter. You play as the a Helvetica "A" and have to shoot other characters.

Inventive and it has great typography.

A minimalist list of movies showing in amazing NYC locations (The Intrepid, Roosevelt Island, Bryant Park…) this summer.

I've never seen it. I guess I'll be able to fix that on July 20th.

Manhattan by the Brooklyn Bridge sounds promising too.

This is awesome. Having them all compiled in one list is great, but having it so minimalist is even better. Thanks for adding this!

Stream new-to-DVD movies for cheap ($1-2). They have movies Netflix streaming doesn't have because when you stream a movie, you're actually renting a physical DVD which they automatically put in a DVD player and stream to you.

The quality isn't amazing, but the overall experience and the terms of the rental are quite good. And I have to respect the entrepreneurial gumption and simplicity.

A delicious Middle Eastern/Russian kosher restaurant hidden in the middle of the diamond district. Fantastic food and atmosphere. Delightfully New York.

Delicious dumplings and tea... In Midtown?! It's true. It's like a little oasis, and best of all, the prices are pretty reasonable (especially their lunch specials).

The only model shoe I've bought for the past several years. They're a bit pricey, but if you're like me and wear them all day every they're more than worth it.

@kendallwebster says I look like Doogie Houser when I wear these but they are comfortable. Kid approved, Podiatrist recommended

Wow. They're making a movie about Florent, the diner in the meatpacking district that closed down a couple years ago. My old office was right near this place and we'd go there for lunch at least once a week. It always had delicious food and a unique atmosphere.

I loved Florent. Why did it close?

nicholasbs

nicholasbs commented 2 years ago

I've heard a couple reasons, including that the rent was increased dramatically when their lease expired. After Florent left, it reopened with a new name (R&L) but the same menu and staff, but that didn't last long.

ah nice idea. there should be a way to generalize this / omm-ify any app.

nicholasbs

Agreed. I dreamt last night that Notational Velocity had an "edit in Ommwriter" command. This morning I realized it has an "Edit in..." option, but it doesn't work with Ommwriter (probably because its native format isn't plaintext :\).

The best intro text for CS theory and possibly the best textbook on *anything*. Incredibly clear and concise. For the proofs, it sketches out the idea/intuition behind the proof before diving into the details.

The content is absolutely fascinating and in many cases genuinely exciting.
