A crime story about a Bombay police inspector and a crime boss that takes you into Bombay's dark alleys and out again through a dozen sub-stories. Vivid and fascinating.

Good quality men's dress shirts, not too expensive. I needed to order a size up from my usual to get a good fit.

I like to have a hardware QWERTY keyboard on my smartphone for writing email and longer text. This phone improves on the MyTouch 3G Slide in several ways, especially in the camera department. It's also a quad-band GSM phone so it should work almost anywhere in the world.

Excerpt from Sleep With Me (1994), where Quentin Tarantino explains the gay subtext in Top Gun.

These motorcycle helmets are like works of art that also protect your head.

This movie defines the genre of film noir. It's a sordid tale of a perfect scheme that doesn't work out the way it was supposed to. Great acting, direction and writing.

Great film noir. It's about a powerful newspaper columnist and an ambitious press agent, but as tense as any crime thriller. The dialogue is razor-sharp, I wish screenwriters today could write like this.

In my "film noir" top 5. Set in post-WWII Vienna when the city was divided into four international zones. An American blunders into the web, but learns that the friend who offered him a job has just been killed in an accident. Though everyone tells him to just go home, he stubbornly keeps chasing shadows until he finds out more than he wanted to know.

Journalism in comic form, portraying Palestinian life in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the early 90s. Makes excellent use of the medium to show the environment in a way that words alone, and even photos have not.

Parody of a GI Joe PSA, featuring the GI Joe character "Blowtorch." One of many such parodies created by Eric Fensler.

The ultimate sandwich, and the pride of Uruguay. Standard ingredients are steak, ham, bacon, lettuce and tomato, melted mozzarella cheese, and a fried egg.

A full-bodied Irish stout. If you like a good Guinness, you'll like Beamish.

Riveting Korean thriller about an ex-cop turned pimp who pursues a serial killer. Inspired by true events.

Italian bitter, supposedly from a 19th century recipe. Whatever the provenance, it makes a great after-dinner digestif.

A terrific restaurant if you like pork and duck and foie gras on everything. And wine, lots of wine. I recommend getting a seat at the counter, where you can watch the action in the open kitchen.

I use it to stream music from my collection on my home computer to my Android phone. It works great and allows me to access anything from my collection, anywhere I have a signal.

Classic funky soul sound. This is on par with the best music from the 70s, but it's being made today.

Compact and easy-to-use headlamp. I wouldn't use it for cave exploration, but it's great for camping and reading at night.
