Because it's fun to speak, the learning curve isn't too steep, it has great literature, and because it's really fun to say eichhoernchen.

Easy and really close to french since that's what i studied while studying german since i'm german lots of people mistake me for a nazi hard to explain why though i don't speak well in english xD

Intelligent, a lot of philosophy has been written in German, it's a big country, much like English (and Dutch)
Cons: Tough grammar, sounds a bit harsh

I actually tried a bit of German in high school, and it really is easier (and fun) for English-speakers to pick up on. Amazing culture too.
