Never enjoyed sci-fi books. This changed that.

The classic that started me reading the genre.

Sci-Fi, Religion, Royalty, the Universe, folding space, genetics, creating the perfect human, love, big worms, and so much more.

One of the most well written, complex and engaging scifi stories of all time.

Dune is good science fiction because Herbert uses space merely as a setting for a most excellent political novel. You'll lear about humans in this book, and not just get a laser sabre shoved down your throat!

The entire series is thought-provoking but I would only recommend the books by Frank and not his son, Brian.

Very good books, worth reading at least the first.

Masterpiece of Sci Fi, political and philosophical thought. Every time I read it I find another aspect to enjoy.

it is one of the books i've read tens of times - fascinated by the worlds and amazing characters - the story is set in the far future yet at the same time it is biblical in its environment and its prose. prophetic and powerful and a great page turner. read it first time in the sinai desert alone in the dunes.

love his ability to integrate politics, psychology, economics, and religious concepts into this book.

I recommend the entire Dunn series; the best rendition of an alien world and society I have ever read. And I've been reading SF for 45 years.

As an avid reader of Science Fiction, this is my first true love as a novel.

Good reading. Very political then scientific in my opinion.

Visionary science-fiction. A must read for all serious sci-fi enthusiasts.

All the books in the series by frank Herbert himself (7?)

Memorable, deep, detailed on many levels - botanically, zoologically, linguistically. You will end up craving the Spice! The people of these epic books seem all too real. Baron Harkonnen is one of the most repugnant characters ever to enter the imaginations of human beings. Muad'Dib!

One of my favorite Sci-fi series. The book has a ridiculous amount of detail but still manages to be a page turner. The world he created feels very real. Read the first book and you'll scramble for the rest.

This was one of those sets of novels that just kept getting better as I dove deeper into it.
Cons: It had to end.

Transferring medieval power struggle and deception between rival families from real history to a space opera and still being not that awkward or disturbing. Nice job, Herbert!
Cons: Heavy reading, lots of cultural references to Middle East and medieval Europe.

Dune series is so complex and interesting, its hard to put the books down.
Cons: By the time the last book is finished, some may be tempted to start reading the series all over again.

Love it or hate it, you sure can't knock Frank for thinking small or simple. Don't let the David Lynch film dissuade you from exploring the many layers at work (wheels within wheels a constant theme).
Cons: The bastardizations by Kevin Anderson at son Brian's direction are a tawdry harlequinade by comparison.
