Best suited for the hard SF crowd, since there's a lot of space travel, aliens, and such. But the points he's making are really about the nature of communication, imagination, and the essence of truth. Plus I had to look up tons of words, because getting the delicate shades of meaning was essential to really understanding the story. That's a good thing.

I'm a huge fan of China Mieville, and his most recent book is one of his best. Imagine a scenario in which humans encounter an utterly alien species for the first time in a far away galaxy, and must discover how to communicate with them. That's the basic premise of Embassytown. Tells the story of Avice, a living simile in the Ariekei language living in a colony on a distant alien world.
