I was looking for a book to read over the holidays, bought it cause I liked the cover. What an amazing find! Bulgakov is an excellent writer. The story is about death that comes to Moskau and he has a talking cat. Death wonders around telling people that are going to die and how. Disturbing sometimes, but also very funny; it gives a great impression of the way of life in Moskau, Russia at the time

Great book! Gives you experience of being in Jerusalem of Pilate. Without mentioned the other vivid character like Devil and his assistants and more of Moscow 1920-30 era...

I'll add my second. This novel is like nothing else I have ever read. Humorous, grim, based on delicious deceptions and realistic magic, with Satan and his entourage endlessly engaging. The Pontius Pilate novel-within-the-novel gives and completely new perspective on the Christ story. Stands alone among classics.

My favourite book. Moving, funny, poetic, grand, visionary, uplifting tribute to the writerly imagination. Even in Stalin's time, manuscripts don't burn.

Written in the 1930s in the Soviet Union but suppressed for three decades, this novel is an absolute masterpiece.
Based on Goethe's Faust but set in Russia and more hallucinatory. Features surreal scenes of a human-sized black cat who lives with the Devil, as well as autobiographical elements such as the burning of a great manuscript—Bulgakov burned the first incarnation of this very book!
