I went to a private school when a teen some 50 years ago. Not Hogworts, but we muggles just don't measure up now, do we? Started reading these when they first were published. Burned through them. I'm a 63 year old fan and can't say enough good things about them. If you haven't read them ... READ THEM!

Quite possibly the best series ever written. Tolkien is great, and C.S. Lewis can be whimsical, but Harry Potter is the gateway drug that gets your foot in the door. Fun for all ages, even adults can't resist the spell - my husband and I fought furiously over whose turn it was to read The Deathly Hallows when the seventh book finally came out just days before our first daughter was due. I won.

Because it's one of the few children stories that can captivate an adult's mind and fantasy. J.K Rowling at her best. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Avoid the movies until you read all the books if possible.

Really wonderful series. Great characters and character development through the series. Gets darker and scarier as you progress so make sure your kids are ready before moving on to the next book. Several clever surprises. Movies made ultimately from each one...no, they don't exactly follow the stories but are not bad adaptations, nice to refresh if you take time between reading each book.

I have loved the series since 1st grade and still do! Amazing and riveting, a timeless book for all ages!
Cons: My only regret is that they only had 7 books... :)

Terrific series that really got my kids into reading. (...and I enjoyed them, too!)
Cons: Last two books are not really suitable for kids under 10-ish.

Imaginative, fantastically written and overall a brilliant series, with the added bonus of being surrounded by an excellent fan community.
Cons: While the first few books are suitable for young teens, the later ones explore more mature themes and are fairly long. Might be wise for first-timers to have a gap between books. Otherwise spectacular
