A Hayao Miyazaki classic, this is one of the finest examples of Japanese animation (and storytelling) there is. I first watched it a decade ago as a child and since then have revisited the gorgeous fantasy world of Japanese folklore and more.

This is a timeless masterpiece for all ages and tugs at all the right heartstrings for that bittersweet yet hopeful aftertaste.

This movie is a piece of art. The direction is great, the drawings near perfection and the animation smooth and fluid. The story is enchanting and the soundtrack is amazing. Really, one of my favorite movies ever.

One of the best movies of all time. Together with "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa" it's the only anime movie I truly love.

This is one of my all-time favourite movies. I was actively disinterested in anime, but this was my introduction to Miyazaki's work and I've loved many of his movies since. This remains one of the best, however.

One of Miyazaki's greatest. A movie that will get you thinking about Japan's struggle to reconcile its traditional roots with the inevitable societal changes brought about by modernity, industrialization and consumption. Especially interesting given Japan's current economic predicament.

Miyazaki's films are deep and humanistic and this is one of his best.
Cons: Purists might want to stick to the subtitled version. The American dialogue feels a tad off in tone.

Miyazaki's masterpiece. An Alice-in-Wonderland-style metaphor describing the life journey of an artist and hero.
Cons: Heavy use of metaphor can turn off those that want something simple and straightforward.

Fantastic (and fantastical). Will surprise you in unexpected ways, particularly if you haven't seen other Miyazaki movies.
Cons: Didn't hold up nearly as well to repeat viewings as I'd expected. (Though still pretty excellent.)
