The story is basically a modern retelling of the the Cretan Labyrinth and the Minotaur of Greek mythology. Suzanne Collins is fairly good storyteller. The book is fast-paced and a quick read. The idea of children killing children will be disturbing for some, and those who prefer more emotionally-involved protagonists may not enjoy the main character.

Suzanne Collins does an excellent job ripping off a variety of battle-to-the-death films and books. The plot isn't wholy original, the story is engrossing from a scenario stand point: what would a televised battle-to-the-death amongst 24 teenagers be like? The answer is super violent.

Cons: Katniss is a terrible protagonist. Sour, quiet, and flat. Would like this to be Peeta's book.

The story itself is wonderful, with well-developed characters who act accordingly based on their personality and background. Furthermore, the socio-political themes allow for deep discussions in any middle school history or literature course.

The action and the bizarre society in which the book takes places makes this an addicting read. If you liked "Ender's Game" or "The Giver", you will probably enjoy this book.

I'm liking this book a lot more than I thought I would. It has a good structure, and keeps you wanting to read past chapter boundaries, which is bad, because I only have time for a chapter or two at a time!

These books were so good, I read them all in one sitting. And although much of it is very serious and dark and at times gory or unpleasant there are plenty of lighthearted moments dispersed throughout to keep it from being overwhelmingly sad, etc.

This is an amazing trilogy with a very unique, thrilling, and futuristic twist resembling the times of Roman gladiators, but modernized. Anyone who likes contemporary thrillers/dramas will love this book.

Is it wrong to say I devoured THE HUNGER GAMES? Although this is considered a Young Adult novel, the ideas are compelling ranging from the huge gap between the ruling class living in obscene wealth while the rest of the population is near starvation to the emphasis on cruel mass entertainment. Parallels?

It's not particularly well written, the plot is not very detailed and the characters are not very deep and complicated, but there is something about this book that makes it impossible to stop reading until the very end. Weird..

It's not the most beautiful or interesting writing (rather bare bones), but for a dystopian story about children forced to kill, it's probably not supposed to be all that beautiful. I'm not fond of the characters all that much, but the message is what gets me the most.

So I'm a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle slow to jump on the Suzanne Collins wagon, but if any of you, like me are, do yourself a favor and READ THIS. In addition to its originality, Collins' commentary on the world and unique depiction of the human condition is a plus to go along with the novel's level of "entertainment".

I tend to stay away from uber-popular series in the YA genre, just because I don't like the feeling of hype permeating my pages. But The Hunger Games is well worth the hype it receives. Katniss is a complex and tragically heroic character that I feel comfortable serving as an inspiration to modern youth.

A great YA series with a strong female lead battling in the post-apocalyptic USA. I was not expecting to like this, since it promises to be the next thing for teenagers to squeal over, but I loved it anyway. A bit of LeGuin's knack for creating rich societies mixed with the gore of Battle Royale.

Great author. We've moved through her "Gregor" series to this series. Much darker but very well told. Probably not good to start if you are younger than 5th grade or so.

Extremely addictive book, good characters development, even more interesting story, and it has a lot mix of different "feelings" action, love. drama etc..
Cons: Extremely addictive i finished in a day, so as the second, Catching Fire, and having to wait a year or so for the third one
