How Hunch Works
Top
What is Hunch?Hunch lets you make and discover recommendations that are based on your tastes. As of November 21, 2011 Hunch is part of eBay.link
How accurate should I expect Hunch's results to be?Hunch's recommendations will become increasingly customized for you the more Hunch gets to know you. How does that happen? By your rating Hunch recommendations and also by your answering the 'Teach Hunch About You' questions which appear throughout the site.link
What do the stars mean on Hunch?Red stars are Hunch's prediction of how well you will like something, for a result that you haven't rated yourself. Once you've rated something, it will show as a yellow star, and Hunch will use that input to make your subsequent recommendations smarter. The number of stars means: 1) Strongly dislike, 2) Dislike, 3) Neutral, 4) Like, 5) Strongly like/favoritelink
How do users contribute knowledge to Hunch? The easiest way to contribute is by rating recommendations made by people you follow (simply choose the number of stars you'd assign to each recommendation). This trains Hunch to be smarter for everyone. link
What are Teach Hunch About You (THAY) questions?Often, seemingly unrelated questions are great in matching users and results. For example, did you know that Republicans are correlated with Fiji Water and Democrats are often seen drinking Evian? Hunch learns about these correlations by examining how the 'Teach Hunch About You' questions on the homepage correspond in aggregate to the recommendations which users prefer. link
What should I do if none of the answers to a particular THAY question apply to me?Just click the "Skip this question" link at the bottom of the question, and the question will be disregarded when Hunch makes a recommendation.link
When I tell Hunch something about me in response to a question, how is that information used? It's pretty simple: Hunch uses your answers to improve the accuracy of the recommendations given to you. Your answers are also used to group you with you other users who have answered questions in a similar way. We never expose your individual answers without your permission, and by default your answers are set to 'private' in your Hunch profile.link
How can I control how the information I provide to Hunch is used?Hunch uses the answers you provide to give you accurate and customized recommendations on Hunch.com and on other sites that you authorize to use your 'Taste Profile'. To review or change which sites have access to your data, visit your account profile (click on your username at the top right of any page), click 'edit profile', and then go to the 'Applications' tab.link
Sure you can. Sharing 'Teach Hunch About You' answers is a fun way to show the world how you think about specific questions and issues. To make those answers visible to others in your user profile, click the "Display my Teach Hunch About You (THAY) answers" box within the "preferences" tab of your account profile. You may also choose to share THAY answers with specific external applications that you specifically authorize.link
How can I delete or change a previously-answered Teach Hunch About You question? You can delete individual THAY answers by clicking the "x" adjacent to any answers shown at the bottom of your user profile. You can also change previously-answered questions by clicking on the link show next to your previous answer.link
Why do I have to create an account to use most features of Hunch?Hunch works best when it learns about you over time. When you have an account, Hunch can get to know you, which improves the accuracy of its recommendations. The easiest way (we call it the "Fast Track") to create an account is by logging into Hunch using a Facebook or Twitter id.link
How can I rate a recommendation if I don't have direct experience with the recommendation that's shown?Hunch uses a star rating system to predict how well you will like each recommendation. If you have direct experience with the proposed recommendation (maybe you own it, or have used it), that's great. But even if you don't, your impression of the recommendation based on what you know about it provides valuable feedback. If you just don't feel like you have enough to go on to say one way or another, just don't rate the item.link
What does it mean to follow someone?Following is a way to watch the activities of someone of interest to you. When you follow someone, their contributions will be shown on your activity feed. You can follow someone by clicking the "Follow" link on the top right of any user's profile page. Click the same link again to stop following the user. You can get an overview of who you're following and who is following you by going to your account profile.link
I think I found a bug with the site. How can I report it?We appreciate your help finding mistakes! You can post these in our bug topic in the Hunch forum, here: Bug Reportslink
What does it mean to be followed? When someone follows you, your contributions will be shown on their activity feed. You can get an overview of who you're following and who is following you by going to your account profile.link
Is there a mobile version of Hunch?Hunch Mobile is available for the iPhone in the US. You can get it here. Very soon we'll release a mobile version which will work with any phone operating system.link
Does Hunch have an API?Yes, Hunch has an API and offers self-service use for non-commercial applications. See the API's extensive documentation. Following our acquisition by eBay, we are no longer supporting commercial use of the API and are also not entering into new business development partnerships with external companies.link
What happens when I recommend something that's already in my feed? You see things in your feed that are recommended by people you follow. If you then click 'recommend' for one of those items, it will in turn be 'pushed' to the recommendation feeds of the people who follow you. Twitter users may recognize this feature as analogous to a 'retweet'.link
How do I save something in my recommendation feed to check out later?Simply click 'Save' next to any item in your feed. That will store it for you so that you can return to it later. You can see all items you've saved by clicking the 'saved for later' button underneath your profile picture on the left side of your feed.link
