Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas' insightful in-depth and intriguing critique of the history of New York City's architecture.

My favorite parts were about several architectures which began as fantastical amusements in Coney Island before becoming realities in Manhattan. Surprisingly this happened on multiple occasions, to the point that Coney Island was like a smaller Manhattan microcosm laboratory.

A real classic, always found it a pity they changed the original cover design

Vetiver, orange, and sage atop nutmeg and amber. Works year-round, but especially suited to fall and winter. Has a nice presence but isn't overpowering.

Really useful in the spring or fall.

Pros: Zero chance any water is going to get inside.

Cons: Non-breathable material (duh!); heavy weight makes long walks difficult, so consider the shorter size or a pair of Bean Boots for the city.

One of my favorite movie theaters in NYC. Great selection of (critically good) contemporary releases mixed with classics and foreign flicks.

Everything feels pretty clean, as far as movie theaters go, and the building is gorgeous. Tons of other stuff to do here besides films, too!

Really good, new Italian sandwich shop from the folks in charge of Crespella. Try the #9 Autogrill and a side of farro salad: www.zitossandwichshoppe.com/zitos_menu_website.pdf

James (@j2d2) is one smart dude, and this thing is poised to take off. He used his Erlang-refined intuition to make an awesome Python web framework using ZeroMQ, Mongrel2, and his DictShield (yuk yuk).

Get these suckers, but do the beyerdynamic ear pad mod before the originals start flaking. A nice side effect is that you get slightly bassier sound, which is great if you're using these to enjoy (versus mix) music.

ooh, hadn't heard abou that mod - thanks!

workmajj commented 1 year, 9 months ago

Cool, right? :-D

I am still getting used to the slightly deeper sound, but I think it works well for casual listening. The stock pads are definitely flatter and probably more accurate, but the velour also feels nice (of course, it also reminds me of a Madonna track suit).

I have a pair of Grado SR-60s and did the "reverse quarter mod" with Sennheiser pads--that also sounds/feels good.

The Platonic sneaker. I've owned three pairs in series over the last four years (thanks, NYC walking). Surprisingly comfortable for something lacking arch support, and stylish to boot (shoe?).

Get the CPs, not the goofy hipster-patterned ones.

One of my favorite electroclash collaborations. It's a little darker-sounding than similar albums, but eminently listenable. This came out right around the same time Miss Kittin was also featured on Felix da Housecat's Kittenz and Thee Glitz.

"The sound picked up by the microphone of the Light Telephone is coded into the transmitted light, decoded again by the receiving party’s Light Telephone using a solar cell, and played over the headphone. This creates, in effect, a two-way walkie talkie without the use of radio waves."

Those promotional photographs are so great.

As already mentioned to @workmajj on Twitter, I made a light phone in highschool using reflected sunlight.
The transmitter prototype was simply a toilet paper tube with a mirror at the end, so the vibrations from talking into it subtly modulated the amount of reflected light, enough to be picked up by a photodiode and turned back into audio.

workmajj

workmajj commented 1 year, 10 months ago

How did (or didn't) that affect the outputted sound? I'm imagining, for example, that maybe it got distorted and made you sound like a robot. Or something.

hrldcpr

hrldcpr commented 1 year, 10 months ago

The fidelity was abominable, so I could barely even tell what effect the tube itself had. But I liked the idea of a purely mechnical transmitter. I never finished the project though :'(

But yeah I expect if you got good fidelity then it would basically sound like talking through a tube, i.e. like a robot! Which would make it extra futuristic!

workmajj commented 1 year, 10 months ago

Yeah, I feel like if it didn't make you sound funny, you'd need to slap a vocoder on it just to have it make sense.

Uffie's tunes fall into that really strange "so bad, they're good" territory. Most tracks sound like an American girl drunk-rapping over Justice tracks, but somehow you keep listening... and humming along.
