My favourite album of 2011. Reminds me of Portishead, but much better. At times it sounds like Autechre hired Siouxsie for vocals. You weren't looking for something jolly for the holiday season were you?

Xenakis has a reputation for being inaccessible and it's probably justified. But I don't see why anyone would have trouble with this work for percussion. I much prefer the version played by the "red fish blue fish" ensemble but this youtube video at least gives you some idea.

Wow that's really cool, I haven't heard Xenakis before.
This one is good too / I maybe like the multiple/larger drums even more:

Also, if you're into interesting rhythms, here are two I really like:
* a very rocking one hunch.com/item/hn_3755361/atlas/
* a very mathy one hunch.com/item/hn_3555801/american-don/

I really like it on the djembe. Try this version: www.amazon.com/Okho/dp/B000SG10YG too.

And just to make sure you don't get too comfortable with Xenakis: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yztoaNakKok

Cool! I'm definitely in the mood for some interesting rhythms.

Hahaha, wow yeah that other piece is definitely... abrasive and terrifying. But cool nonetheless!

I like the one you call "very mathy". Another fun avenue of music to explore. Thanks!

Cool, glad you like the mathy one. I just discovered an acoustic guitarist who strikes me as similar to that, so you may like it as well: hunch.com/item/hn_4006131/everybody-loves-you/

One of my favourite tracks. All seems sweet and light until 1:50, it descends into apparent chaos at 2:00, lulls you into a false sense of security at 2:15, and then he gradually reopens the floodgates. But at 5:00 he just acts all innocent like nothing ever happened.

It's not Joy Division, but it's the nearest thing.

Interpol are one of those bands that I remember once a year and wonder how I forgot about them. This debut album was amazingly good.

I need to forget them. I'm sure I'd enjoy them more I rediscovered them once a year instead of playing their albums to death :-)
