A great story in its own right with some profound things to say about societies. I've read it three times as a child, a youth and an adult and found new aspects to it each time (and enjoyed it each time too).

Stunning film lead by a bravura performance from Choi Min-sik. Very dark, but surprising, involving and wonderfully executed.

Massive Attack were a great band before this album, but Mezzanine became a landmark of change and Black Milk is one of the songs that, to me, defines the album. Shame that Manfred Mann sued over the sample from Tribute.

This has been serving up mirth for me for several years. Funny, clever, silly and worth the read.

Witty movie about the clumsy but good-natured monsieur Hulot. Shows the absurdity of everyday life. Almost no dialogue, but funny body-language and sounds.

One of the best British/Irish sitcoms ever made. The cast are all brilliant and it works as a sad drama too (which just makes their pathetic failures funnier).

If you're going to use wires and CGI in your kung fu movie do it well. If you do it half as well as Kung Fu Hustle you're doing a good job. Lots of great jokes about kung fu movies and some great fight scenes too.

One of the best movies made about justice and the ideological foundations of the American legal system.
Plus, the dramatic tension you feel when watching these 12 men almost dying of heat with a small room for only setting for 96 minutes is indescribable.
Sidney Lumet, Henry Fonda, what more could you want?

This album is full of fascinating music tied together with rich and highly accomplished vocals by Shara Worden. It sort of fits into the indie-pop bracket but there's much more to it than that. Clever instrumentation and arrangements make My Brightest Diamond something out of the ordinary.

It took me a little while to fall in love with Silversun Pickups but I did. There are some lovely contradictions to them, dark but with seriously catchy poppy hooks. They also write songs that adults can listen to the lyrics of without feeling like they need a lobotomy.

Grungey dystopian gloom-pop doesn't get much better than this from Disarm, She Makes War's debut album. Excellent video also.

Berber music that sweeps you up and carries you to a better place. Great singing supported by some lovely electric guitar and bass playing.

Stunning intelligent book that wraps some serious musings about science, logic, religion and perception of time into a rocking good plot.
