Ev Williams' (Blogger, Twitter) new project is still in closed beta, but it promises to be a reinvention of online publishing. Worth watching.

The new Digg (from the News.Me team) is pared down from what the old digg used to be, but it's much better for it. No more gaming of the front page or burying of items by committee, just news curated from the best of the Internet.

It's a Google Reader/RSS ecosystem for Apple products. I have it on my mac, my iPhone and my iPad and they all work flawlessly. It's never been so easy (or attractive) to keep up to date wherever I am...

The interface is intuitive, the design and typography are amazing, and it turns your social and news feeds into a personal magazine that reflects what you really want to read. Both the iPad and iPhone versions are fabulous.

It changed everything in terms of smartphones. It wasn't the first, but Apple did its magic and created something that was truly transformative. Now, we can't imagine life without it and the many competitors it spawned. And they great thing is they just get better with every iteration.

New social networks are 10 a-penny these days, but CircleMe and its' iPhone app are a bit of a standout. Based around the idea of creating networks of people who have similar tastes, it's an excellent way of discovering new stuff to try, whether it's books, movies, bands, food etc.

Foursquare has subtly evolved over its life to become a really cool, useful local recommendations app, and it's fun too.

Ever wanted to know what you were doing on this day a year ago? Timehop is your answer. The iPhone app is excellent too, and allows you to go back even further in time.

A paean to comics, and a warning against the dark side of creativity, Hicksville is the enthralling story of a journalist and his quest to write the biography of a famous cartoonist. What he finds, however, is a twisted tale of plagiarism, secrets and a library that contains treasures that he could never have imagined.

The first in McCloud's trilogy of comics theory disguised as a comic itself, Understanding Comics is something of a milestone in the field of comics studies. Taking the reader on a journey of discovery about how comics actually work, McCloud has done that most remarkable thing: made an analysis of the workings of an art form accessible to all, and kicked off a dialogue that continues to this day.

It's hard to describe this book other than to say that it's a tour-de-force from the late, lamented British Graphic Design icon Alan Fletcher. A massive, freewheeling tome about everything and anything, it deserves to be on the desk of every person who calls themselves 'creative'. It's one of the most inspirational books I own, and I can't recommend it enough.
