Although I have not yet completed the book (I had to return it to the library with less than a hundred pages to go), I knew that I would take it out again and complete it. Friedberg spells out China's likely plans for its role in the Pacific with assured mastery and sounds a clear wake-up call for US policy for the coming decades. All of Asia hangs in the balance, and the US must react to China.

Because I never not learn something when watching his myriad programs or listening to him. He's brilliant and funny and everything I want to be when I grow up.

It's a total departure for Kevin Smith, away from his usual comedies into a much more graphic and horrifying world. He paints a realistic image of a warped Christian sect married to weapons and murder, and brings out stellar performances from both John Goodman (as a conflicted ATF agent) and Michael Parks (as the pathological preacher). As inspired as Tarantino in its bloodshed.

Anne Rice may have left the Catholic Church, but she was clearly at a point in her writing where she needed to share her love of God. Choosing to do so through angels was a masterstroke of brilliance on her part, and her storytelling has never been better as a result. She creates characters that are utterly real and believable, and for the span of the novel, you are with them totally. I loved it.
