I love lavender ice cream. I had it once over a peach cobbler and it was delicious. You may have to pair it with something so it doesn't taste too much like soap.

Hunch predicts my taste perfectly here. My favorite photographer. The clarity of that black and white; the stunning arrest of the moment.

I have the cheap version--also Cuisinart ($50), and I love it. I invent things like raspberry-basil Ice cream. Or fresh black raspberry and chocolate chip to rival our local Graeter's. Have to grow more lavender so I can experiment with that.

one of the best, most moving films I've seen.

These are gorgeous--but where can I buy them? I couldn't figure it out on the site.

I own two of these--they are great for the garden, to sit and read or simply meditate (with a drink on the armrest--wide enough to fit). I have to repaint this summer (but I left them out all winter, oops). They fold up for storage--very handy.

If you like Sherlock Holmes, you ought to read this. It's Barnes' fictional version of an episode in the life of Arthur Conan Doyle and it's riveting.

Barnes is one of a handfull of great living British writers, and this is his most acclaimed work--but there are lots of others. He's also fun to read.

Post-modern brit goes epic historical adventure story--set in 18th century Japan. Fun. Lots of critical praise when it came out.

brilliant but accessible post-modern novel. British writer. Each chapter is a different genre, including history, travel, detective, fantasy and sci-fi, but they all interconnect at the end.

One of my favorite contemporary novels. Touching and funny; beautiful language. Alternates points of view between young teenage girl and an old man, intertwining plots. Set in NYC.

Another great NYC post-9/11 novel mostly from the point of view of a boy who lost his father. It's about loss, healing, memory. My college students adore this book, and I do too. Playfull, imaginative, moving, and verbally brilliant.

New Dawn is the best of the climbers. It blooms heaviliy in the spring and then reblooms throughout the summer. It is very pale pink and fades to white.

This is the best poetry website. They post a new poem every day, and keep you up to date with contemporary poets--the good ones. It was started by Robert Pinsky. If you want to learn more about contemporary serious poetry, you've gotta have this. I make it my home page and start my day by reading a (good) poem. More serene and centering than the news.

This is the standard siberian iris--mine are blooming right now (May). Easy and gorgeous. The clumps expand every year.

Yes! I love this chef, whose restaurant Chez Panisse changed food in America. Now she's written cook books for all of us--see also her beautiful Vegetables, and Fruits.

This is a brilliant writer--Irish, living in NYC. Extraordinary NY characters, very moving story, set in the 1970's on the day Henri Petit tightrope walked between the Twin Towers. See his other books too. See documentary Man on Wire as a fun supplement to reading the book.
