Invented by Caesar Cardini during the Prohibition era. Needs to be made properly- to the original recipe.

Bit of a "faux" tartan this one. Legend has it that "Childers Universal" was invented by Erskine Childers (author of The Riddle of the Sands) as a "Universal" tartan that could be worn by Englishmen at government functions. This may or may not be the case, but it's one of the more tasteful tartans, in my opinion, and would make an excellent picnic rug- or indeed, a pair of ultra smart trews.

Of course, of course....the ubiquitous, much maligned, classic cocktail, as drunk by the English in huge quantities. London Dry Gin, Schweppes Tonic Water, Ice, Slice of Lemon or Lime. Served cold. That's it.

In early Summer the hedgerows of England are full of the smell of Wild Garlic. It has a much subtler, milder taste than standard garlic bulbs, and is brilliant to use in risotto.

Oh how I loved this when it first came out in 1990! Watched it over and over again. Whit Stillman's brilliant low-budget take on Manhatten preppies on the Deb Circuit. Lots of talking, not much action, script-led, witty, urbane, slightly jerky direction; like modern-day Jane Austen. If you loathed "Titanic" you're going to love this.

Truly wonderful music from Michel Legrand. Catherine Deneuve is stunning; Demy's saturated 'technicolor' vision is charming. The last sequence, set in an Esso garage is genuinely moving. Great classic of the French New Wave.

Jacques Tati's 1958 comedy. Slightly surreal, hardly a word spoken, a gentle dig at the fashionable French modernism of the period.

So simple. Mutton (or Lamb), potatoes, possibly carrots. But it works. Sometimes simplicity in food is the way forward.

An acquired taste, but once you've got the hang of it...used in Pink Gin, and good as a flavour enhancer in cooking. Piquant.
