While the sentiments expressed in this speech are profound and universal, and while Chaplin took an inordinately high personal and professional risk to make this film as he did and when he did, contextually this speech ruins what might have been an even stronger film...or as Roger Ebert put it, "What he says is true enough, but it deflates the comedy and ends the picture as a lecture."

Saw it with our kids and grandma last year and was mesmerized.

Having said all that, the speech itself (outside of the context of the movie) is still quite moving...
