A police procedural set in Shanghai in the 1990s...but written in English by a contemporary Chinese exile. A rare insight for anyone interested in modern China. The author Qiu Xiao Long ended up exiled in the US in 1989 during the Tian An Men uprising, and susequently became a mystery novelist...seems a lot better than a reeducation camp in Inner Mongolia for sure!!
