Back when I was in schools we used the Motorola 68HC11 (now Freescale I think) and it was a bitch to code for and expensive. For a long time I thought this was perfectly normal. Then I found out about the Arduino. It was cheap, easy to use and simple to build. It completely changed my view on microcontrollers.

These things are great; so easy to get started with electronics / programming / both! And at the same time you can make some badass stuff with it.

The atmel chips on these are pretty puny though, so if you want to do serious audio or video stuff, our MIT friends made a similar ARM-based one: www.seeedstudio.com/depot/leaf-maple-cortex-m3-p-670.html
