This is an interesting book covering a topic (American circus history) and time period (Depression America) in an entertaining way. It's a love story and history together.

This is a wonderful book, and must be read at least a few months before seeing the movie, in order to let it sink in. Quite horrific what happened.

One of the best books that I have read in a while. I really had no interest in the circus before reading it (mainly because clowns freak me out), but the author does an excellent job of creating the mystery and excitement that you felt when you went as a child.

One of my favorites - very touching story as seen through the eyes of the older Jacob. A good reminder that in every withering old person there is a virile, vibrant young person just longing to be freed, each with a unique story just waiting to be told.

Great book! Very easy to read. Not sure if I want to see the movie, though. Reading about this is one thing, but I can't imagine actually seeing all of it.

Gruen knows how to tell an engaging story. If you don't mind her simpler writing style, then you'll love this book.

don't watch the movie until reading the book. if you loved the story behind secretariat, you will love Water for Elephants. One of the best written novels that I have read. I have a soft spot for unattainable romance, the bond between people and animals and how they all come together to form a story worth reading.

This is a fun book to read. The author did a lot of research before writing it and many of the interesting plot lines within the book are based on actual happenings.
