This is a grown-up movie, as many of the characters are gross, scary, freaks. Dark comedy.

lame pet lizard turned into a hero of a village full of rodents dying of thirst: awesome, but not much of an improvement for the little guy

This film can be enjoyed by a five-year old. This film can be enjoyed by a fifty-year old. The reasons both enjoy the film are disparate but equally valid. This film is a simple tale while also being a knowing and hilarious history of the western genre (with a Gilliamesque tint).
