Innovative, diverse-sounding, sophisticated. In their impressive 3-decade career, DM's sound has encompassed dark, industrial electro, plaintive torch songs, tinkly-bonk pop, bluesy rock, and intelligent dance music. Lyrically, songwriter Martin Gore is obsessed with obsession, offering a perfect blend of lust and religion, or perhaps lust-as-religion. DM moves the heart as well as the feet.
Excellent songwriting, songs have the ability to stay in your head for days...in a good way. Excellent live band. Music has much more swagger now than in their earlier works. Cons: Not the biggest fan of their last album. It did however translate well live.
Depeche Mode is often labeled an "80's band," however, they released some of the best albums in the 1990's. Cases in point: Ultra and Songs of Faith and Devotion. Cons: Their first three albums (pre-Some Great Reward) suck. The best are great until basically Sounds of The Universe (the last one). Still, they've had really only 2 major crap albums and the rest is tops
