Paul Krugman had a really good 1984 reference while talking about Fox News:
“…but [Fox] — with its Orwellian slogan, ‘fair and balanced’ — has always denied the obvious.” nyti.ms/dgPM1C

Although society doesn't actually look like this dystopian future, there are many striking similarities.

I'm reading this currently and it's surprisingly current. It almost feels like it can be written at an "unknown time, 50 years in the future." Pinning the date down to 1984 makes the book seem dated.

I love this book, re read so many times.
thesudokukid recommended this 9 months, 1 week ago
This book is a little creepy and the ending is more than a little chilling. But since that's what the author set out to do when he wrote this book to warn us about what can happen in the future it's good for the author.
I won't ruin the book for you but the place where there is no light isn't as nice and friendly as it sounds.

It is as though Orwell was privileged to a view of the future, and 1984 is his journal.
Through the eyes of Winston Smith, audiences are sent on a journey through a totalitarian Oceania (London), where Big Brother watches over virtually every moment of it's citizens lives, insuring that only wholesale obdience to the government is practiced, and harsh punishment is doled out to those that waiver.

The book is a classic. Good example of early cold war hysteria. Interesting read in our era of government surveillance.

This book awoke my political consciousness as a teenager. Essential for the modern world.

This book was hard to get through at points. In the end it was worth it, though. I read this book several weeks ago and I still find myself thinking about the ideas it inspires.

Amazingly well written novel. Extremely depressing, but beautifully written.
brian_pthompson recommended this 1 year, 8 months ago
My favorite book. So many other stories in all media draw inspiration from the setting alone.

Read it. It will change your life.
amandapickering recommended this 1 year, 8 months ago
Make sure to read 1984 so you will catch all the references to an "Orwellian" future I've recently seen popping up in articles. This is a very important book.

It makes you think. Therefore, it is great.
vhugo recommended this 2 years, 1 month ago
Read this book is, at first, the bigger doublethinking you'll do on life: you'll contemplate a totally unreal and opressive atmosphere and society, and, at the same time, see that it's totally possible that it may be happening right now, with ourselves as the proles. Just amazing.

An intelligent, confronting, relentless story. It makes you realise just how much we rely on governments to control our lives.
Cons: It leaves you feeling wary and uncomfortable, because it refuses to give you the happy ending we all want.

Ottima immagine della società contemporanea, storia interessante ed una struggente storia d'amore
Cons: La conclusione
cadyglaser recommended this 2 years, 7 months ago
Amazing social commentary that seems timeless
Cons: Importance gets reduced because it is cited so often

good story. great for dystopian fiction.
Cons: a bit dark.

Fantastic book...
Cons: ...but I'd hardly call it a light and refreshing summer read. :-)
krazykj recommended this 2 years, 12 months ago
Possibly my all-time favorite. So thought-provoking, wonderfully written. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Cons: Not for the faint of heart, slight sexual scenes (if you find that offensive).
peter recommended this 3 years ago
Great story and a quick read! Very engaging and thought provoking. I really liked the analysis of “newspeak” and how “the book” gets worked into the story.
spikesnsilk recommended this 3 years, 5 months ago
Incredibly well thought-out, with no loose ends and no escape from its doomsday pull.
Cons: Is possibly overrated, and, being a dystopian novel, does not end well.
ghengispresley recommended this 3 years, 7 months ago
Probably one of the most important books ever written.
Cons: Governments seem to regard it as a recipe book rather then a warning.
joyewonder recommended this 3 years, 10 months ago
Great story; classic
Cons: It's a good story overall, but it can be a bit dry in some parts
rhapsody1386 recommended this 3 years, 10 months ago

great scenario for the future, entertaining and relevant to the present time
Cons: unfortunately, many will have read this in school and had their opinion of it marred by teachers!

Cons: May require multiple passes to really grasp some of the ideas. May give you nightmares or paranoia.

Recommended for people who realise the importance of the correct use of language (excuse my sloppy english) and who like rats.
Cons: Didn't foresee the computer and of course the dystopias of Huxley are much more hedonistic.
tag recommended this 4 years, 1 month ago
Very good book. It will force you to think about the ways society functions, and how thought works. Or if you don't care about those things, it probably won't. But it will still be a good read.
Cons: Similar to his other books, or at least Animal Farm
hugo recommended this 4 years, 4 months ago
dystopian tales, my favorite genre. so many of our important cultural references come from 1984 - 'newspeak', 'big brother', 'perpetual war'. ...a must read!
