Fantastically thoughtful evocation of our near-future world, suffering in the aftermath of global warming and genetic engineering run amok. Refreshingly it's set in a future Thailand, at once an alien and familiar world.

You really care about the richly detailed characters even when they're not that sympathetic.
Cons: Some intense scense of sexaul violence may be offputting to some readers.

This book is scarily good. Yes it's allegorical and political, but more than anything else, it's just a compelling story with richly drawn characters.
