My godmother gave me this book a while back and I still haven’t read it. I guess it’s too late to act all cool and tough about it, since I failed to read it before the HBO series.
Language: English
Authors: George R.R. Martin
Page count: 704

An epic fantasy with politics, sex, magic, battles and much more!

grabbed me and wouldn't let go. If you enjoy fantasy, twist, turns, surprises, characters that make you laugh and make you cry........just start the series, you won't be sorry. (until you get to the end and have no idea when all those characters are going to come back to life!!!!). can't wait til the next book is written.

I've been an avid fantasy reader throughout my life, and after reading the first four of the Game of Thrones series I would conclude that Martin has created an epic saga comparable to that of Tolken. The way he seamlessly weaves together complex story-lines of dynamic characters will have you glued to your seat start to finish.

I have always loved fantasy adventure novels and these did not disappoint. I couldn't put these books down, don't be daunted by their length, I never wanted them to end.

Great book. Author understands that risk to all characters equals more suspense (you never think "well, so and so HAS to make it)

Fast paced and intriguing, this book will keep you interested with its many characters and varying plot-lines.

This is the first volume of one of the finest fantasy series I've ever read. You'll probably devour it and rush to read the rest. The quality begins to flag toward the last couple of volumes, but by then you'll be so hooked on the world, the stories and the characters (many characters) that you won't want to quit. In fact, you'll probably be among the frustrated horde exhorting Martin to finish.

An incredible start to an incredible series. Well written, amazing story, outstanding book.

It's not Shakespeare, but nothing written in the last 200 years is closer.

Hunch gave it to me and now I am addicted. Don't start reading unless you're willing to invest hundreds of hours of your life and 50 bucks on paper back books
buckybuckmaster recommended this 1 year, 9 months ago
The first book is a slow start, but it is definitely worth it as it establishes characters, political tensions and setting to make the rest of the series amazing

Although I have read countless fantasy novels, George Martin's books are among the top 10. His books are a weird blend of history and fantasy (although with a somewhat complex story).
lordvandamm recommended this 1 year, 9 months ago
A very interesting and intriguing story, however rather long and unfinished at the moment.

Great series, a very addicting read

George RR Martin has wed the politics of Dune, with the breadth and depth of Tolkien, and a heavy serving of medieval psuedo-history. Easily one of the most addictive fantasy titles I have ever read.

the start to the epic series that is one of Time magazine's top 5 fantasy and sci-fi novels of all time. game of Thrones shows George RR Martin's ability to create diverse and unpredictable characters. a must read!

of course this blew everyone out of the water this year, but i found the books slow reading. the most important story for me was dany and the dragons, but martin spends a lot less time with her. fortunately the series was all i could have hoped for and she gets equal story time. i hope it continues that way...

Amazing book... Can't read without feeling I'm right there!
bananaz recommended this 1 year, 10 months ago
All I will say is do not get too attached to the characters. All of the books in the series are an excellent read. Get ready for a long ride.
maggieyg recommended this 1 year, 11 months ago
Interesting characters in an alternate reality that has a nice balance of difference and familiarity. This series (the fifth just came out) is more like a soap opera than a novel - it moves very slowly as it follows many many characters (in detail - what they ate, what they wore, who they killed.) If you're OK with that, enjoy! If you need a resolution in the books you read, these are not for you.
awebg recommended this 1 year, 11 months ago
I normally am not so into fantasy, but this addictive series provides days and days of escapism without ever getting boring. Each book is thousands of pages long, and there are 5 books! Memorable characters, unexpected plot twists, and moments of hilarity. Set in a medieval world with just the right amount of magic.
david-stott recommended this 1 year, 11 months ago
Can't decide which I like more, the book or the series. Usually this is a no-brainer.
boyata recommended this 1 year, 11 months ago
This is a great fantasy series. Wish the last books were published though! The story ends in a very awkward place and seems to lose focus in the last few books.

Didn't get the chance to read the books. But the series on HBO is indescribably awesome! Am just dying to see what happens on the next season.

I'm about half-way through this book and am really enjoying it. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy reading it since I already know what happens throughout and at the end (because I watched the HBO show). I recommend reading it even if you've seen the show because you get to know the characters in much greater detail.

One of the most awesome fantasy series of all time and a personal favorite since '98. The writing is sensuous and fast-paced. The cast is a menagerie of well-developed characters, from which you can pick which to love and hate (this is not a typical good vs. evil plot). Epic court intrigue, illicit relationships, ancient family lineages, cross-continental war - why aren't you reading it yet?

My favorite in the "Song of Ice and Fire" trilogy, this epic by George R. R. Martin won a Locus Award, was nominated for a Nebula and Wold Fantasy Award, and spun off a trading card and roleplaying game. The book follows three storylines simultaneously and was a real page-turner of magic and mayhem.
I noticed a girl reading this book on the subway, perhaps due to the eponymous HBO original series.

So I read it and am now halfway through the 2nd novel—great books! I started the HBO series with @laurengabriela too and now she’s on the 3rd book.
dimatosj recommended this 2 years, 2 months ago
You have *just* enough time to start this before sunday's premier on HBO. This epic fantasy series pulls you in at about page 100 and you're yelling battle cries jumping out of your chair halfway through. Maybe that's just me. But look at it it this way: how much more satisfying is it to see a character you've toiled alongside come to life in an HBO production? plus, swords and battleaxes.
