When he says Rosebud, Susan Anthony has just left him. he suddenly realizes he has squandered the second half of his life and he is trying to remember what he was doing before he met her. what he was doing was, he was on his way to the warehouse where all his childhood possessions were stored (where Rosebud was). He was trying to regain his humanity when he was distracted by a pretty girl.
