i went with the slightly more compact D5100, but I absolutely love it. Also agree that the standard lens is pretty good.

A great first DSLR, it has all of the features that you need to get started in photography. The 18-55mm kit lens that comes with it is a great lens, and if you buy them together it is great value.

Cheapest, smallest and lightest Nikon DSLR (now superseded by the D3100). The body is not as important as the lens--especially for starters-- so I would suggest purchasing this body and combining it with the 35mm f1.8 Nikkor lens. It's the most cost effective route that'll still achieve photos that will have people thinking that you spent much more than you actually did on your equipment.
