George R. R Martin is really different with his novels, and not only weaves deep characters but can be very ruthless with them in a way that keeps you wanting more and more.

This is my favorite fantasy series, and could be my favorite series in general. It is a fantasy story, but it avoids all of the things which make fantasy seem unbelievable. What I mean is the characters are real and flawed (all of them), and because it is told from multiple perspectives it's hard to say who is "good." The characters develop excellently-- my most hated character became my favorite.
The series keeps you on your toes. It will make your day when your favourite character does something and when you think you know what's going to happen, a key character got killed. Once you start the series, it is very hard to stop, ans yes, you will hate the author for making you wait for the next instalment.
I discovered this was a book series after watching the first three episodes of the HBO series...Books are much better...but be warned they are very long and very addicting...It is considered fantasy but it is very accessable to all sorts of readers as it is not over the top.
Unique and absorbing fantasy series for adults. Dark and gritty world (no one is safe) with characters that are both interesting and grey. Still unfinished, but it may well be a greatest fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings. Must read for even those that aren't into fantasy (yet).
I'm reading the first book in this series by George R. R. Martin and I'm loving it. I don't normally go for fantasy novels but this book is appealing in ways I wasn't expecting. The characters are all so strong–you really get attached to them. Also, the writer uses humor really well through the dialogue of the characters. Tyrion is my favorite.
Unique, fresh, and masterfully written, this series is a gritty, intricate, and realistic fantasy setting filled with fascinating characters who develop in unpredictable directions.
Cons: Definitely dark and adult content, themes, and style. The plotlines of some characters move slowly, and the series remains unfinished (though an HBO adaptation of the first book airs soon).
