first of all it plays everything, I mean I never met format which cannot be played by it. and also it is very simple in use.

I have used VLC for years and it is my favorite video player. Simple, free, no bells and whistles, and doesn't take up more space than it needs to. Most importantly, it plays nearly everything!

You get this and you don't need to worry about any codecs or what kind of video file you have, cos it simply plays probably everything you can think of. And it's really user friendly.

The best media player out there. If you are playing any kind of audio or video, and don't care about managing tools like iTunes, then you shouldn't be using anything other than this program.

I don't know why everyone doesn't use this player. It's small and light, plays absolutely every format and never needs a codec. I don't even install windows media player since I've been using it.

Just about the most versatile media player out there. It doesn't require any external codecs and still it is able to play just about any media file known to man. Awesome set of features built-in but is easy to use at the same time. Startup is really fast and the player doesn't use much RAM compared to other players. If you are really oldschool then you will also appreciate command line support! :)

Better than Windows Media Player. I know that is setting the bar very low. Equivalent to KMPlayer or Media Player Classic.

VLC is soooo powerful it hurts. As wel as play as a client it can act as a media streaming server. The beauty is that it's the same software that can do both! The server code even has built in HTTP authentication without the need for an external web server. Simply awesome!

Awesome, lightweight media player that will run pretty much anything from movies to music. Works great with HD movies, as it has full support for surround sound, and plays HD files seamlessly.

After getting this I never had to worry about a codec again. If you managed to get the iOS version before it was pulled from the app-store, that's great too.

VLC is a champion media player. It's free, open source, works on operating systems you've never even heard of and plays most every file format (including, oddly enough, RAR files)
VLC also offers a bunch of awesome yet little-known features such as ASCII terminal mode, multicast, YouTube video download, a web interface, and automatic audio normalization.
I wish Winamp would have stayed as popular.
