Besides being the true story of General George S. Patton during WWII, it is a tour de force of acting for George C. Scott.
You've never met a person like Patton. You come away in awe and inspired. However, as with many geniuses, his flaws are very manifest, bordering on insanity.
Hinted in the movie, it would have been a very different world if he had been a general in the Third Reich. I agree.
