Epic success! The story may not be terribly deep, but the movies are stunningly rich in aesthetic detail and done with great passion. It's not at all necessary to read the original novel first.

These are, in my opinion, the best movies ever made. The whole journey is amazing, the locations the movies are filmed in, and the brilliant directing from Peter Jackson

Possibly the best fantasy movie (and one of the best movies, period) of all time, as well as a phenomenal novel adaptation. Beautiful score and cinematography, amazing visual effects, edge-of-your-seat action, outstanding acting... the 3rd part, Return of the King, didn't win 11 Oscars for nothing.
Cons: Each movie is, at minimum, 3 hours long (MUCH longer if the extended versions are watched),...

Awesome movies. :) Action in it's own style. Amazing actor performances, amazing effects, simply awesome.
Cons: Not exactly taken straight from the books - hardcore Lord of the Rings fans may be disappointed somewhat.
