As a Texan, I just can't give El Vez my official seal of approval -- it's not really Mexican or Tex-Mex. But if you go in expecting slightly overpriced trendy dishes that just happen to include tortillas, you'll do just fine. Also, the drinks are really strong, which typically leads to some memorable photo booth shots :)

Jose Garces is legit, I was just spoiled by 21 years of eating hole-in-the-wall Mexican food in Texas!

You should give El Rey a shot too. It's not as good as El Vez, but Steven Starr's take on a Mexican diner is worth trying. (They have a great Mexican brunch - but it doesn't top Distrito IMO).

Dos Segundos and The Cantina are my personal favorites, but I have heard good things about El Rey's margaritas. I'll report back :)
