You can't label something as Kafka-esque until you read this impressively paranoid story. The trial scene in The Spy Who Came In From The Cold has to have been inspired by this incredible piece of literature.
Cons: Kafka died before he finished the whole text, so there are parts that have been spliced in as the editor's best guess.

It's all about neurosis and the contingence problem. To die like a dog is a perfect end.
