What is the purpose of the "I already own this" option on the results page? How will that information affect your results?

So far it doesn't affect your results at all...for now we are just recording it, and we will be figuring out how to integrate it after we've seen some activity around it.

Interesting. I look forward to an update to this. I suppose you all have several ideas of how this can be used. Will this information remain "invisible" from others?

Will there be a way to update the data when a person gives an item away or sells it? Or does that not matter to you so much as just knowing that the user selected it for purchase in the first place?

The most important piece of data for now is just that the user owned it at some point. Perhaps somewhere down the road we might distinguish between 'own it' and 'used to own it'.

@kelly, In some instances, using an item might work. Perhaps for topics like deodorants and lotions and such. Cleaning supplies. These are items that many people commit to, so having that distinction could help as well. Good thinking @dystopic_thinker.

@rhapsody1386: Actually, yes- maybe better terminology than just "I own it" is "I own it/use it". Besides the types of goods you describe, "use it" is clearly also a better nomenclature for services.

One step on the road to stop recommending things people already own.

I like this idea; it's a good way to stop recommending products you already own. Is there a way to access a list of all the items we've marked as owned so we can edit that list?

@sushimustwrite - no way to do that yet as this really is the very 1st step we're taking in this new direction. We decided it was important enough to start piling up the info. that we should get it out in the wild asap. A simple list in your profile would definitely be useful. I personally like the way gdgt.com handles this with "Have it" "Want it" "Had it" on their gadget listings. Toss around any ideas you'd like to see here in the forums.

I don't see the "already own this" option any more. I hope this isn't going to be a permanent change because I think that info could be really useful. Obviously, it could be used to give users the option of filtering those items out when looking through topic lists, but I also like the idea of seeing the items your friends own in order to help you make purchasing decisions for yourself(ask them about it) or to prevent you from buying them a present they already own.
