First, let me say it would be great to have an idea-specific Feedback link (like idea.informer.com), as employed on many, many modern websites. Making users go to a "Help Forum" to submit feedback or ideas is not on the leading edge of website design, and is not ideal.
Second, my feedback is that if hunch puts a topic list in your view (e.g. front page list of topics) that is completely antithetical to your personality, you should have a way to tell hunch that you reject the entire topic. I think this will go a long way to improving your understanding of people's personalities. For example, in my case, the top left topic -- basically the one that looks "most important" -- is Sci-Fi Authors. However, since I almost universally hate Sci-Fi, I think the topic itself should have a 1-5 star indicator, where one can permanently banish it. Once one is inside a topic, one gets the 1-5 star ratings for each specific suggestion, and the "ignore" option. So the same UI on the topics themselves would be great.

As a follow-up, this could auto-mark all of the suggestions in the topic as hated (or loved, or ignored, or middle-of-the-road, for that matter).

Let's say you HATE heavy metal music, but do enjoy other types of rock music. When you see heavy metal music you would give it low ratings, and therefore nearly all the ratings you'd leave in that topic would be negative. However, in other somewhat similar topics like Alternative Rock or Indie Rock, your ratings may be more mixed up among both positive and negative ones. This means you like some of that topic and don't like other parts, in contrast to Heavy metal where you don't like anything.
Of course there are tricks to making this work well, which is why we're taking our time testing out such a system. Getting close though...

I understand what you're saying, but it's just tedious to look for the things that I know I won't like (heavy metal, reggae music, rap music, etc.) and then individually rate every heavy metal recommendation lowly so that the system knows to stop predicting 5 star ratings for recommendations of such music.
While what you are suggesting works, it's just frustrating for new users to have to listen to so much music that they don't like in order to eventually get recommendations that they might not hate. I think a normal user (not like myself) would get frustrated and give up before seeing the potential of the site to give good recommendations.

- not only bottom up feedback by ratings, but also top- down feedback by hating/loving topics, and why not: hating subcultures, genres, etc
- of course to implement this Hunch should build a hierarchical taxonomy of all the cultural items with different levels of granularity
- likes and dislikes could be indicated by tags on the profile

If it is done properly, the user won't have to feel as if Hunch is repeatedly requiring them to tell us what they don't like. Instead, Hunch should realize that a user has hit a certain tipping point (sorry Gladwell) at which time that topic is known to be one the user does not enjoy.
Doing this quickly based solely off ratings is tough, so we're looking at ways that the account creation process can help. Between the star ratings that users leave on the site and the social graph they build finding tastemates, we think we can pull this off in a fairly painfree manner.
Would we have to connect all of our topics into a connected hierarchy/taxonomy? Yes, but in many ways it already is, so to start we can build off of that. Additionally, Hunch has an understanding of how the taste profile of various genres relate.
For example, liking Metal Music may not correlate with liking Folk Music. Therefore, Hunch can learn (generally) about a couple of categories even when you've told us about just the one.
