Your local, lovable mutt
All resultsThis dog may be found at a friend's house, your local shelter or at a rescue organization. Dogs of mixed lineage can be as good a pet as those of more "refined" breeding, and the price is right (generally: free). Be certain to ask all the necessary questions, as bringing a dog into your home is a very big decision. If choosing a shelter, look into what your various options are locally. more on dogtime.com

Generally smart, easy to train and loving. They usually have less health issues than pure breds.
Dog could have been abused by a past owner so you may have some issues to deal with.

Often very loyal and loving. Shelter dogs also tend to be very human-oriented.
Some may have fear of humans or other animals depending on its past.

Shelter dogs are the best, and they'll always appreciate you for rescuing them.

With shelters full of dogs, it's hard to justify paying someone to make more of them.
You can't really know the dog's past in most cases.

You get the best of many breeds in a shelter dog -- and the unwavering appreciation for providing a home for them to truly be a dog!
Background is often missing, which means you have to make the effort to really get to know the dog.

Always great to help out your local shelter
Less training as they tend to be older -

Most of the time they need love, and most of the time, dog owners are willing to give it. They usually don't take what they have for granted
you don't know it's past, nor it's records, unless your local shelter provides those things. But even still, you never have control of a shelter dog's past

Hybrid vigor! Plus, adopt a dog and you're part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Behavior and health could be unpredictable depending on ancestry.

I've found that they are very sweet and easily trained.
Never know what kind of genes you're getting (illnesses, aggressiveness, easily startled, etc.)

You are giving a wonderful dog a second chance if you rescue from a shelter and are making a friend for life. :) Mutts are often less susceptible to illnesses pure-bred dogs frequently suffer.
If from a shelter, can be shy or scared at first, but no great relationship ever comes easily. ;)
