Murfreesboro, TN, USA
Waaay off the beaten path. The road to the pinnacles is a very bumpy 5-mile long dirt road. It seemed like it took forever to get there, but we made the most of it and it was great fun. The pinnacles are amazing and photos seldom do them justice. They were formed underwater tens of thousands of years ago. The location has been used in the filming of dozens of movies and TV shows.
Nice battlefield park. It's not covered with markers and monuments, like Shiloh or Gettysburg, but it's pretty well laid out and has enough information for you to get a feel for what happened. One of the most important battles of the war.
Be sure to visit the nearby historic square, which is one of the locations of fighting during Nathan Bedford Forrest's 1862 raid on Murfreesboro.
I enjoyed this museum, especially the pop culture displays which are better than anywhere else. It's the Smithsonian, it's cool. But somehow, I expected more. The updated building is roomy and has lots of light. But it makes you feel a bit short-changed on display items, especially when you consider just how many artifacts the museum has in storage.
