dystopian tales, my favorite genre. so many of our important cultural references come from 1984 - 'newspeak', 'big brother', 'perpetual war'. ...a must read!

culturally relevant. shaps how we look at ourselves. especially good take on the role language plays in culture and personal psychology.
tends to be dismissed as hyperbole. not the most subtle presentation.

Very good book. It will force you to think about the ways society functions, and how thought works. Or if you don't care about those things, it probably won't. But it will still be a good read.
Similar to his other books, or at least Animal Farm

Always a classic, and a book that everyone not apathetic toward society today should read.
Goes a bit slowly...

Recommended for people who realise the importance of the correct use of language (excuse my sloppy english) and who like rats.
Didn't foresee the computer and of course the dystopias of Huxley are much more hedonistic.

It was a really good book with a good message. It was thought provoking and different. The characters played very well.
It wasn't written too well. I thought some things got a bit boring, and some details detracted from the story.

A classic dystopian novel. Great story.
Moves quite slowly at times. The ideas in the novel have been repeated and refined to produce much better works (Huxley, etc.)

A great read. Eerily applicable to today's society. A good treatise on big-brother, big government, and human apathy.
There's a really nasty scene involving some rats! Not for the faint of heart, or the sickeningly optimistic.

Reading it right now; enjoying it so far.
Agree that it can drag sometimes. Long passages with no real breaks to stop at.

great scenario for the future, entertaining and relevant to the present time
unfortunately, many will have read this in school and had their opinion of it marred by teachers!

Very well written book. Interesting take on the "future." Surprised this is read by high schoolers.
Made me feel a little paranoid afterwards. Long chapters, no good place to stop.

readable, highly ironic even if it is a bit dated ... relevant yes, but not as much as it was during the long ascent of the USSR
I agree with joyewonder - is dry in parts, perhaps Orwell's polemics are not so well suited to the novel form
