This guys projects range from at least mildly interesting to OMG AWESOME! The home made electron microscope is definitely in the latter category.

Starts with various puzzles ranging from easy hard. After you learn how it works you can even try to fold an actual protein from its sequence, one whose structure is not yet known to anyone.

Wow, with coffee a balloon and a vacuum they completely changed how I imagine future robots interacting with objects. On the down side, the Terminator, Ig-88 and friends would look a lot less threatening brandishing these on the big screen.

All of the dials on the dashboard in the picture work, I'm not sure I can really describe the experience better than that. If you have ever wanted to fly an airplane I recommend giving FlightGear a try.

Indeed he is the modern wizard, dabbling in arcane mathematics and speaking strange languages, weaving his prestidigitations he can mesmerize people for hours on end.
As far as people judging code quality goes, I prefer furrowed brow index, it's easy to quantify and slightly less ambiguous than laughter.

I would add "Who's Harry Crumb?" and several others, he made plenty of excellent movies in spite of not having reached advanced age.

Most don't have a lot of production value but there are some real gems in there that make up for it. Right up there with the ted.com stuff in some cases.
