Excellent fruit - but you MUST wait until it is mushy before eating (very astringent when not ripe!). When mushy, it is SUPER sweet - you can eat it straight, or use it like you'd use jam/jelly.

The other option is to dry the fruit. When dried, it will last a long time (like a date or raisin).

There are different types and are eaten differently. The astringent type (like the Hachiyas) are eaten mush or dried. The non-astringent type (like a Fuyu) can be eaten like an apple, when soft, or dried.

This is one of the best-tasting European-type pears.

Can I get it in the states?

Yes - stores (and nurseries) occasionally carry them. These pears tend to bruise easily so you won't see them too often. Harry and David's (the gift basket people) sell them as "Royal Riviera" pears, but they are basically the same pear.

Ooh I think I might have had them once from Harry and David's. Thank you! I will try to get some. How do you know so much about fruit (if you don't mind me asking...)?

I work for the government making weapons-grade fruit to lob at enemy positions. No, actually, growing crazy fruit is one of my hobbies. :-)
